Death by 1080 Vs Humane Death - Compare the photos

The following is a series of photos recently taken of two deer.
One series is of a necropsy of a deer killed by 1080.
The other is of a deer necropsied after being
shot through the neck, and died instantly.

Scientists (Dr Charles Eason, Dr Hugh Barr) estimate over 20,000 deer are killed every
year in New Zealand by 1080,
plus tens of thousands of native birds, and many pets and farm animals.

Death, for an animal shot through the neck, is instantaneous.
An animal poisoned with 1080 will take from two hours to die,
to several days, depending on the dose.
Some animals are only half  poisoned, and left to recover with
varying degrees of disability.

1080 is a favourite "tool" of our Department of Conservation,
the Animal Health Board, and some regional councils ...
who are all holding hands in perpetrating this gross
act of New Zealand ecocide!

There are alternatives, and we will be addressing those in our new documentary.

However, there is no question that 1080 is grossly inhumane,
and that as New Zealanders, through our authorities continued use
of 1080, we are all basted with the mass scale, animal cruelty brush.

DEER SHOT THROUGH NECK, KILLED QUICKLY

HIND KILLED BY 1080. Legs straight out, head twisted back.
This is consistent  with all deer found dead in 1080 drops.

At the request of a concerned person, this photo has been added to show the bullet EXIT wound in the neck of the animal that died humanely, and was autopsied. It's the same deer, in the same position as the first photo in the series above. Yes people, any autopsy of an animal killed by 1080 will show the same thing, and so will any autopsy of an animal humanely killed by shooting. Death by 1080 is grossly inhumane, and that won't change because of our ignorance, or not wanting to accept it.

  1. These are exceptionally misleading photos, especially the one of the "face-down"side of the deers face.Blood is affected by gravity, same as anything else. When the heart stops beating, the blood is drawn towards the ground, and pools on the underside. THIS is the effect you are seeing, not 1080 poisoning.

At the moment, 1080 is the most effective weapon we have against evasive pests in New Zealand. Trapping is usually touted as a better alternative to aerial drops. However, there are recorded instances of hunters and trappers RELEASING pests into the environment to make a profit off later, Meanwhile, these released pests breed and wreak havoc.
Ahh, but I forgot, The Graf Boys are among the few who believe that the New Zealand Forest is there for there selfish wants. Don't believe me? See for your self... Posted by Kukupa

  2. These are not "exceptionally misleading photo's"! These photos are not revealing the true extent of how vile the use of 1080 poison is when used to kill animals. You are very naive, if you believe an animal bleeds out its eyes, and rear end after it has been killed humanely. Look at the photos, look at the differences, one is clearly killed humanely, the other with a vile poison called 1080!
The reason blood has come out the deer's eyes and rear end is because of the extreme blood pressure that has resulted in the burst blood vessels. This NEVER happens when an animal is killed humanely with a bullet.
Why do you cling to 1080, like it's a medicine, a fertiliser, a growth hormone, and saviour of forests? It's not! 1080 is a deadly poison, that kills large numbers of untargeted animals, and kills them in a gross way.
We are not against pest control, we're all for it - but it must be done in a targeted, and responsible way. Not in a selfish way, with selfish motives like those that appear to be carried by the extreme pro-1080 folk that insist on inilatting the ecosystem to realise their unrealistic goals, using nazi-enviromentalism. If the pro-1080 folk are really dedicated to their cause, they should be the first to leave the country, and fight for their cause from a pest free island, because it is man that is responsible for the destruction of our environment - not wild animals.

  3. Clyde - did you shoot that deer especially to prvide yourself with a photo opportunity? Can't see anything that shows a shot to the neck.

  4. I haven't shot a deer in 4 years. The deer was shot for the table by Steve, and the opprotunity to take photos was also taken. I will post the photo of the neck-shot.
To use 1080 to kill animals is grossly inhumane, and an attrocity when we take into account how many 100's of thousands of animals are killed with it every year.

  5. I am open to both sides of the 1080 debate, however seeing any living creature dying such a cruel painful death turns me anti 1080, there must be a better way!

  6. hmmm, very politic not to show any blood or injury in the photos of the shot deer. or to mention how long after death each set of photos was taken.

four years and counting! you saint. but undoubtedly handy to have good mates who specialise in apparently bloodless neck shots. framed on what looks suspiciously like grazed pasture.

you've all the makings of a successful politician, boyo.

  7. Because you have little experience in animal welfare, butchery, or hunting, your comments can be understood. A neck-shot kills an animal instantly, and there is no bloodloss or bleed-out because the heart stops, practically instantly. Even so, a body shot animal that runs 100 metres after being fatally hit, that dies after about 15 seconds on the run, has the same condition of organs as the neckshot animal, apart from the direct impact areas.
It matters little, gunshot is humane - 1080 is not!
I have no desire to shoot deer, I prefer to photograph them. To get a good photo is 10 times harder than shooting one.
Deer are a valuable asset to our forests, and should be treated as such.
This deer was shot in the middle of the Te Urewera National Park, on a clearing known as Horseshoe Bend. This can be proven, as can be the fact that 1080 is a vile "tool" of nazi-eco-terrorists like DoC, AHB, and regional councils.
No, the deer wasn't spotlighted, and no, I have never, in my life, shot a deer in a spotlight, and never will!
I think it is your ignorance, and your support of 1080 that is offensive...Boyo!

  8. you're right, I'm nowhere near as experienced in the mechanics of killing deer as you. your patient attitude to my ignorance is much appreciated. but if you can tolerate a couple more ignorant questions

    was there an exit wound?
what did the tissue around the direct impact area on the neck look like? compared with the 1080 deer?
do all body shot deer run only 100 metres before dropping dead, or do some get slightly further than that? to the extent that even a diligent hunter can't find them?
how long do you think it was since the 1080 deer died before you took the photos?

I like to look at deer too, and have no desire to have them suffer through 1080, shooting or any other human invention. However I do think they're tasty, probably as you do.

You seem to have assumed I'm pro-1080. look to your campaign platform, candidate boyo.

  9. What a painful death that must be, for what purpose did that animal die? It writhed in agony being poisoned to death and will now rot.
"I like to look at deer too, and have no desire to have them suffer through 1080, shooting or any other human invention. However I do think they're tasty, probably as you do."
Where is the intelligent thought in that statement? I like the taste of deer but only when it dies by natural causes? Do you eat road kill?

  10. 1080 is a horrible way for such a majestic animal to die by, i think deer are a stunning animal and can watch them all day and i would rather see one killed humanely by a shot through the neck then be poisoned by this vile poison that ppl like u anonymous celebrate.

  11. Writing as one who has poisoned many many thousands of animals/birds and who knows what else, and also participated in compound 1080 poison trials back in the fifties,I can confirm what Clyde has written about the slow and agonising death animals suffer from this poison. Even rats shouldn't have to die like that.
